Children's Book Lists
Our
kids read a lot of books -- sometimes, they even read a book several times in a
row simply because they enjoy it so much! The following list is a relatively
short list that currently has the kids staying up late at
night or that includes some of their favorites. (All books available via Amazon.com.)
We also present two additional lists of children's things that
our kids enjoy.
| Title & Description |
The
Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
Both boys are in the middle of the whole series, including the
movie. Our youngest has just finished
The Fellowship of the Ring and our oldest is deep into
The Hobbit.
The kids may not get all the words but they get excited by the imagery and are
fascinated by the imagination. When I was growing up, this was one of my
favorite series - I remember the weekend Tolkien binges, once every year,
when I would curl up on the the sofa with all four of
the books for a weekend read-through.
|
Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins
by Eric Kimmel
One of our boys' favorite stories about how a wise man can save Hanukkah from the
goblins through clever use of
Hanukkah games and traditions. Or read Kimmel's newest book
called The Jar of Fools: Eight Hanukkah Stories from Chelm. |
The BFG
by Roald Dahl
Our oldest boy loves this story and all of the inventive details. (Can
anyone say what a snozzcumber is!) Catch the story on
video too. |
|
Star Wars: A New Hope by George Lucas and others includes the book versions
of the 'first' three movies: Star Wars,
The Empire Strikes Back (with Donald F. Glut) and
Return of the Jedi (with James Kahn). |
George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake (Illustrator)
Like all of Roald Dahl's books, this book combines a sense of the absurd
with comical results. In this case, who wouldn't want to make up a special
medicine to give to that 'special' someone? |
The Hardy Boys Starter Set by Franklin W. Dixon
This is the goodnight reading book for our youngest. It's written at just
the right level for him to really enjoy the details. |
For every production that is performed through out the year, the Seattle Children's
Theatre develops a booklist with the assistance of the King County Library system. In addition to providing some additional
entertaining reading for children who are captivated by the play, this book list of between
10-15 titles is designed to help children get additional background on the issues presented
in the play at the appropriate level. Moreover, there are also several books recommended
for parents or teachers that are at a different level. To find the recommended books for
each production, just click on the title below.

In addition to books, our boys have truly enjoyed learning
about classical music through a series of CDs produced by an organization called
Classical Kids. We've had the CDs in this set for over a year now. At first, the
kids loved the stories which provide a sense of history and place and,
ultimately, keep the kids interested in the entire CD. As they listened (time
and time again), they started to pay more attention to the musical portions.
Recently, we've been able to tell that they've picked up a sense of the music as
we've listed to classical music on the car radio. Time and again, they perk up
when listening to a piece of music and surprise us by saying "That's Beethoven".
Sure enough - they've picked up something about the style of music that's
characteristic of Beethoven. Sometimes it's the snippet of music from the CD and
other times it's just the rhythms that are characteristic of that piece. As a
family, we all recommend these.
