Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster
Jon Krakauer

The book describes Krakauer's own experiences during the killer Everest storm of 1996. The book starts by delving into Krakauer's own fascination with the mountain and continues with the description of his own summit attempt. Ultimately, fourteen people were killed on the mountain including several of the lead guides and other members of Krakauer's climbing party. This book spurred quite a controversy among climbing circles due to the way that it portrayed other climbers.

While not the only account of the deadly storm (see below), it is probably the easiest read.

Winner of a 1997 Banff Mountain Book Festival Award in Mountain Literature category and a finalist for the 1997 Boardman Tasker Memorial Award.
