Photograph Notes: We visited Black Butte Ranch in
early August of 2003 and witnessed an amazing thunder and lightning display that
must have lasted about six hours. The picture of the lightning strike
that we captured below was one of a hundred plus strikes that evening.

here.) Black Butte is located in Central Oregon just a few miles east of the
crest of the Cascades. It is usually very dry in the summer but, with
its closeness to the 10,000 foot peaks of the Three Sisters, it is also
subject to lightning storms like the one that we captured here and in
the next couple of photos. |
