Wasp Nest
We found this lovely wasp nest while hiking on some of the trails
in our place. Fortunately, this was in November and the wasps were either
dormant or dead. We did test the premise by poking at the branches with a five
foot stick and then backing off a few more feet just to make sure that there was
no unforeseen eruption of wasps. We don't know if these were ordinary wasps,
yellowjackets, hornets, or some other form of paper wasps -- and we didn't want
to be around in order to find out. Anyway, once we knew that the nest was
dormant, we could get close enough to see lots of details. The main entrance to
the nest is very visible at the bottom left.
